Defensive Coordinator and Goalie coach at Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute and is entering his 4th year. He has coached R.P.I. to an overall record of 34-15 and a NCAA III playoff berth. In 2014 Els, Head Coach Jim Townsend and Jeff Ocampo won Liberty League Coaching Staff of the year. Also, R.P.I. Man-down defense was ranked #1 in 2014 and 2015. In 2015 the team lead all of lacrosse including DI and DII! That was 3of 42 at .071%. In 2014- 4 of 40 at .100%. R.P.I. finished their 2016 campaign earning a NCAA III Tournament berth. Liberty League Final and a Top 15 ranking. Previously Coach Els was the goalie coach at Connecticut College. Where his team also earned at NCAA III Tournament berth and a top 15 ranking in 2012. Within the past 5 years Coach Els has produced two different All-Americans; one at each school, Bobby Bleinstein, Conn. College '12 and Alex Costronovo, R.P.I. '14. Neither were All-American prior.
He is now coaching David Gibbs who has started the last 32 games. He has earned All-Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week 4 times. Also he was named Second Team in All-Liberty League. Leading his team to the Liberty League Finals and a NCAA III Playoff berth. Over the past four years Coach Els has been part of two coaching staffs that went to the NCAA's Connecticut College in 2012 and R.P.I. in 2016. In addition to his college coaching, Els has coached for several years both at camps and in high schools. He currently serves a Head-Coach for Connecticut Rip-it lacrosse program and in 2009, he became the Department Head of Lacrosse at Greylock Sports Camp in Beckett, MA. He was a varsity boys lacrosse Coach at Lee High School in Lee, MA from 2009-2011.
In addition to Camp Greylock, Coach Els has either coached or has been on Staff at Elite 100 (Endicott College), Blue Chip (U-Mass), 3-D (National), F.L.G. (Long Island), National 175, Adrenaline Lacrosse, I.M.G. Academy Florida and Aloha Lax. Originally from Long Island N.Y. Bill Els attended St. Anthony High School in Smithtown NY from 1976-80. He was the starting Varsity Goalie All Four years earning All- Long Island Honors. Earning a scholarship at Hofstra University in Hempstead Long Island from 1980-1984. He started four years there 1983 and 1984 were ranked Top 10 in Division I. After Hofstra Els joined the New York Fire Department as his father did. He served 20 years was cited for bravery three times and served during 9/11.
